The dead fish I saw floating on top of the water I believe were carp, definitely not gars.

The water was less than a foot deep in the middle of the lake, well under what it was the previous weekend. At the rate it's going down, and assuming it doesn't rain, I'd guess it'll be just a puddle in two weeks. I wonder how feasible it would be to put a depth gauge in the deepest part of the lake while it's dry.

Also I forgot to mention that in addition to the usual hog and coyote prints in the mud, I saw a set of bobcat prints.David LeCounthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10106288248844820185noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15172790781117660.post-4103288010784589292012-07-30T08:13:22.233-05:002012-07-30T08:13:22.233-05:00@David,

The alligator gars are usually the last to perish since they can withstand the low oxygen content.

The Roseate Spoonbills and Wood Storks actually eat a fair amount of crawfish, snails, tadpoles and frogs so they will stick around till all of that vanishes.

How close did you get to the pig?DallasTrinityTrailshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16787691728343464938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15172790781117660.post-77866002286821320782012-07-30T01:18:55.026-05:002012-07-30T01:18:55.026-05:00Very cool. I also got pretty close to a hog in the water probably feasting on one of the many dead fish floating in the near-dead lake. I'd be surprised if most of the birds don't leave in the next week.David LeCounthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10106288248844820185noreply@blogger.com
