It may well be that given the urban nature of surrounding terrain, noxious, weedy species may invade more readily than native early sere plants, too, and those may need some control. But I suspect that in 15 years, the place will look natural with or without remediation, though it might not look just like it did before the fire. Of course, I may be proven wrong, too. The damage from that event will need remediation that natural processes cannot remedy. The bulldozer took out a swath of Swamp Privet and other desired species in that riparian environment. Twenty years of growth was removed by that.

The fire burned nearly all the Painted Bunting and Indigo Bunting nests as well in the treeline.DallasTrinityTrailshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/16787691728343464938noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-15172790781117660.post-85123413699103854662014-07-29T14:10:06.761-05:002014-07-29T14:10:06.761-05:00Ben, good to see a couple more great articles, thi...Ben, good to see a couple more great articles, this one on the fire, and the following on the spoonbills. Wow, those are stunning photos of stunning birds!

Not to worry, regarding the fire. Fire is a natural feature of such landscapes. It allows seedlings to establish and surviving propagules from pre-existing plants to get a head start. Burning favors grasses over woody vegetation if it occurs with any regularity, and that is a part of why NC Texas was naturally a prairie.

I know it looks like the area has been trashed. But it will come back.

David McNeelyAnonymousnoreply@blogger.com
